Medicare Long Term Care Hospital Beds by Region

Providing longer duration inpatient hospital care (in excess of 25 days on average) to individuals with complex medical conditions, long-term care hospitals (LTCHs) are an important part of the national hospital infrastructure that serves over 62 million Americans with Medicare long-term care coverage.  In the calendar year 2020, the Medicare program counted among its participating providers 347 LTCHs that had more than 23,700 total beds.  Here is a regional breakdown of Medicare's long-term care hospital bed capacity (to see state-level data, follow the "region" links in the table below):

Rehabilitation hospitals comprise part of the hospital network that serves the needs of over 62 million Americans with Medicare Part A insurance coverage.  Over 6,200 hospitals of various types, with more than 927,000 beds in the aggregate, were participating in the Medicare program as of the calendar year 2020.  Rehabilitation hospitals made up about 5% of those hospitals and accounted for just over 2% of those hospital beds.

In the calendar year 2020, the four-state Southwest region of the U.S. was home to 84 rehabilitation hospitals, with about 4,600 beds, that were participating in the Medicare program.  As such, the Southwest region was home to about 11% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollees and 24% of the program's rehabilitation hospital beds.  Here is a state-level summary look at Medicare rehabilitation hospital beds in the Southwest region of the U.S.:

Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) provide services to more than 62 million Americans with Medicare Part A SNF coverage.  SNFs are institutional medical providers staffed and equipped to give skilled nursing care on a daily basis. Skilled nursing facilities, in most cases, can also provide skilled rehabilitative care and certain other related services.  More than 15,000 skilled nursing facilities, having over 1.58 million beds, were participating in the Medicare program as of the calendar year 2020.

In the calendar year 2020, the twelve-state Southeastern U.S. was home to 3,560 skilled nursing facilities, having over 390,000 beds, that were participating in the Medicare program.  Although home to 24.6% of Medicare's SNF beds, about 27.3% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollees lived in the region.  Thus, Medicare enrollees in the region were modestly under-served by SNF beds relative to enrollees in many other parts of the country.  Here is a summary look at Medicare skilled nursing facility beds in the Southeast:

Long Term Care Hospitals (LTCHs) serve the needs of more than 62 million Americans having Medicare Part A long-term care coverage.  LTCHs provide hospital care to individuals with complex medical conditions that require longer duration (in excess of 25 days on average) inpatient care.  Over 6,200 hospitals in total, with more than 927,300 beds, were participating in the Medicare program as of the calendar year 2020.  Long-term care hospitals accounted for about 5.6% of those hospitals and approximately 2.6% of those hospital beds.

In the calendar year 2020, the five-state Rocky Mountain region of the U.S. was home to 12 LTCHs, with 572 beds, that were participating in the Medicare program.  This made the region home to about 3.3% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollees, but only 2.4% of the program's long-term care hospital beds, thus making the area's Medicare enrollees modestly under-served for LTCH bed capacity relative to other regions of the country.  Here is a closer look at Medicare Long Term Care hospital beds in the Rocky Mountain region:

Rehabilitation hospitals are a key part of the hospital infrastructure serving the needs of the more than 62 million Americans with Medicare Part A insurance coverage.  As of the calendar year 2020, rehabilitation hospitals accounted for about 5% of the 6,200 plus hospitals, and just over 2% of the 927,300 plus hospital beds, that participated in the Medicare program.

Psychiatric hospitals are key elements of the hospital infrastructure that serves over 62 million Americans with Medicare Part A insurance coverage.  In the calendar year 2020, over 6,200 hospitals of all types, with over 927,300 beds in total, were participating in the Medicare program.  Roughly 10% of those hospitals were psychiatric hospitals and they accounted for about 6.6% of total hospital beds.

The six-state Far West region of the U.S. was home to 65 psychiatric hospitals, with nearly 5,400 beds, that were participating in the Medicare program in the calendar year 2020.  Most Medicare enrollees in the Far West region are relatively under-served for psychiatric hospital bed capacity.  Although the region is home to over 15% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollees, the Far West states hold only 8.8% of the program's psychiatric hospital bed capacity.  Here is a closer look at Medicare psychiatric hospital beds in the Far West region of the U.S.:

Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) serve the needs of over 62 million Americans having Medicare Part A SNF coverage.  Staffed and equipped to provide skilled nursing care on a daily basis, SNFs serve individuals whose medical condition requires daily inpatient nursing care, but not the intensive inpatient care normally provided by short-stay hospitals.  Examples of SNF care include physical therapy or intravenous injections that can only be given by a registered nurse or doctor. More than 15,000 skilled nursing facilities, with more than 1,588,000 beds, were participating in the Medicare program as of the calendar year 2020.

In the calendar year 2020, the Great Plains states were home to 1,920 SNFs, with over 149,000 beds, that were participating in the Medicare program.  The region thus was home to about 6.6% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollees and 9.4% of the program's SNF beds, indicating that enrollees in the region were relatively well served by SNF bed capacity in comparison to some other regions of the country.  Here is a summary look at Medicare skilled nursing facility beds in the Great Plains states:
