Psychiatric hospitals account for about 10% of the hospitals, and just over 6.4% of the hospital beds, that provide the hospital infrastructure serving more than 60 million Americans having Medicare Part A insurance coverage. In calendar year 2019, the seven-state Great Plains region of the U.S. was home to 39 psychiatric hospitals, with over 2,400 beds, who were participating in the Medicare program. While the region was home to about 6.6% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollment, it had only 4.0% of the Medicare program's psychiatric hospital beds.
