Ten States with the Highest Male Heart Disease Death Rates

Males accounted for almost 382,800 of the 696,962 deaths in the United States attributable to heart disease in 2020.  At 235.9 deaths per 100,000 population, heart disease was the leading cause of death among men in the United States in 2020, accounting for about 21.6% of all male deaths in the U.S. that year.  At the state level, there was a wide disparity in the rate of heart disease deaths among men.  In the ten states with the worst incidence of heart disease deaths for males, the death rate ranged from 23% to 42% higher than the male-only national average death rate from heart disease.  In comparison to the overall U.S. death rate from heart disease in 2020, these ten states had male death rates that ranged from 37% to 58% above the national average.  Further examination of data from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics revealed the following details about the ten states with the highest male heart disease death rates in 2020:

Ten States with the Highest Female Heart Disease Death Rates

Women accounted for 314,186 out of the approximately 697,000 deaths in the U.S. that were attributed to heart disease in 2020.  At 187.9 deaths per 100,000 population, heart disease was the leading cause of death among women in the United States in 2020, accounting for about 19.5% of all female deaths in the U.S. that year.  At the state level, there was much disparity in the incidence of female heart disease deaths.  In the ten states with the worst incidence of heart disease deaths for women, the death rate ranged from 22% to 42% higher than the national average for women.  In nine of these states, the female heart disease death rate was higher than even the national male-only heart disease death rate of 235.9 deaths per 100,000 population.  A closer examination of data from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics revealed the following details about the ten states with the highest female heart disease death rates in 2020:

Male Heart Disease Death Rates in the U.S. by Region

Female Heart Disease Death Rates in the U.S. by Region

Women accounted for 314,186 of the nearly 697,000 heart disease deaths in the United States in 2020.  At 187.9 deaths per 100,000 population, the heart disease death rate for females in the U.S. in 2020 was about 20% lower than the male rate and  11.1% lower than the overall national heart disease death rate.  At the regional level, the female heart disease death rate was lowest in the five-state Rocky Mountain region and the highest in the Mid-Eastern U.S., a region that includes the District of Columbia and five states.  A closer examination of data from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics provides the following details about female heart disease rates in the U.S. by region (follow the "region" links below for female heart disease death rate information at the state level within each region):

Male vs. Female Heart Disease Death Rates in the Great Plains Region

The U.S. recorded over 696,900 deaths in 2020 that were attributable to heart disease.  The seven-state Great Plains region accounted for 45,060 of those heart disease deaths in 2020.   At  209.8 heart disease deaths per 100,000 population, the region had the fourth-highest regional heart disease death rate in 2020.  As seen throughout the U.S., the heart disease death rate for women in the Great Plains region was notably lower than the male rate.  The heart disease death rate for men in the region was slightly better than it was for males nationally, whereas the death rate for women in the region was slightly worse than for females nationally. Male vs. Female Heart Disease Death Rates in the Far Western U.S.

Heart disease accounted for nearly 697,000 deaths in the U.S. in the 2020 calendar year.  In the six-state Far Western U.S., there were more than 96,800 heart disease deaths that year.   Conforming to a pattern seen elsewhere in the country, the heart disease death rate for men in the Far Western states was worse than it was for women.  That said, the heart disease death rate for both genders in the Far West was below the overall national average death rate from heart disease in 2020.  That result was in keeping with the fact that the Far Western U.S. had the nation's second-lowest regional heart disease death rate in 2020. Male vs. Female Heart Disease Death Rates in the Great Lakes Region

The U.S. recorded almost 697,000 deaths in 2020 that were attributable to heart disease.  The five-state Great Lakes region accounted for nearly 113,000 of those heart disease deaths.   At  241.2 heart disease deaths per 100,000 population, the region had the worst regional heart disease death rate in 2020.  As seen throughout the U.S., the heart disease death rate for men in the Great Lakes region was worse than the female rate.  Moreover, in 2020 the heart disease death rate for both genders in the region was higher than the overall national average of 211.5 deaths per 100,000 population. Male vs. Female Heart Disease Death Rates in New England

Almost 697,000 deaths in the U.S. in 2020 were attributable to heart disease.  In the six-state New England region, heart disease accounted for 28,580 deaths in 2020.  At 192.5 heart disease deaths per 100,000 population, the New England region had the fourth-lowest regional heart disease death rate in 2020.  Similar to a pattern seen throughout the U.S., the heart disease death rate for females in the region was considerably lower than it was for males.  That said, males and females in New England both had heart disease death rates per 100,000 population that were below the national average for their respective genders.  Further review of data from the National Center for Health Statistics provides the following revelations about male vs. female heart disease death rates in New England:

Male vs. Female Heart Disease Death Rates in the Southeastern U.S.

Heart disease accounted for nearly 197,000 deaths in the twelve-state Southeastern U.S. in 2020.  The region's heart disease death rate of 229.9 deaths per 100,000 population was 8.7% higher than the national average.  As a whole, the Southeastern U.S. had the third-worst regional heart disease death rate in the nation in 2020.  Among men in the Southeastern U.S., the heart disease death rate was nearly 11% higher than it was for men nationally.  Among women in the Southeast, the death rate from heart disease was about 6.3% above the national average for women.  A closer look into data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) reveals the following about male vs. female heart disease death rates in the Southeastern U.S.:

Male vs. Female Heart Disease Death Rates in the Rocky Mountain Region

In 2020, just under 697,000 deaths in the U.S. were attributed to heart disease, making it the nation's leading cause of death.  That year there were 19,063 deaths in the five-state Rocky Mountain region that were attributable to heart disease.   In a pattern seen throughout much of the nation, the heart disease death rate for men in the Rocky Mountain states was noticeably higher than it was for women.  That said, the heart disease death rate for both genders in the region was much lower than the national average, which is not surprising given that the Rocky Mountain states collectively had the lowest regional heart disease death rate in the nation in 2020.  A summary review of data from the National Center for Health Statistics, a unit of the CDC, reveals the following about male vs. female heart disease death rates in the Rocky Mountain region:

Male vs. Female Heart Disease Death Rates in the Southwestern U.S.

Heart disease accounted for almost 697,000 deaths in the U.S. in 2020. making it the nation's leading cause of death.  In the four-state Southwestern U.S., there were more than 80,400 heart disease deaths that year.   Consistent with a pattern seen nationally, the heart disease death rate for women in the region was lower than it was for men.  That said, in 2020 the heart disease death rate in the Southwestern U.S. for each gender was below the national average for the respective gender.  That result was consistent with the fact that in 2020 the Southwestern U.S. had the nation's third-lowest regional heart disease death rate. Urban vs. Rural Drug-Induced Death Rates in the Rocky Mountain Region

In the five-state Rocky Mountain region of the U.S., drug-induced causes, mostly overdoses, accounted for 2,765 deaths in 2020.  Relative to population size, at 22.0 deaths per 100,000 population, the drug-induced death rate in the region was almost 25% below the national average.  Statistically, this gave the Rocky Mountain region the third-lowest regional drug-induced death rate in the U.S. in 2020.  In a pattern seen elsewhere in the U.S., the drug-induced death rate in the region's largest urban population centers ran noticeably higher than in its smaller metro and rural populations.  This is in contrast to the all-cause death rate, which typically runs lower in larger metro areas than in smaller metro and rural populations.  A deeper dive into data from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) reveals the following details about urban vs. rural drug-induced death rates in the Rocky Mountain region:

Urban vs. Rural Drug-Induced Death Rates in the Far Western U.S.

In 2020 there were nearly 13,700 deaths in the six-state Far Western U.S. region that were attributable to drug-induced causes.  Relative to the size of its population, at 24.2 death per 100,000 population, the drug-induced death rate in the Far West was about 17% below the national average in 2020.  In most parts of the country, the drug-induced death rate tends to run materially higher in larger urban areas as compared to more rural populations.  That was not the case in the Far Western states as the death rate from drug-related incidents was very similar across all urban and rural population classes in the region.  A closer examination of data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) provides the following details about urban vs. rural drug-induced death rates in the Far Western U.S.:

Urban vs. Rural Drug-Induced Death Rates in the Great Plains Region

In the seven-state Great Plains region, drug-induced deaths, mostly attributable to overdoses, accounted for 4,542 deaths in 2020.  Relative to population size, the drug-induced death rate of 21.1 deaths per 100,000 population in the region was nearly 28% lower than the national average.  This gave the Great Plains the second-lowest regional drug-induced death rate in 2020.  There was, however, a very wide disparity in the drug-induced death rates between urban and rural populations in the region, with death rates in smaller communities and rural areas being much lower than in larger urban areas.  Despite the region having an overall low drug-induced death rate in comparison to the nation as a whole, large central metro areas in the region collectively had a higher drug-induced death rate than the national average.  Further study of data from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) yields the following details about urban vs. rural drug-induced death rates in the Great Plains region:
