Homicide Rates in the Great Lakes Region

In 2020, more than 24,500 fatalities in the U.S. were attributed to homicide incidents.  The five-state Great Lakes region accounted for over 4,100 homicide deaths in 2020, or about 16.8% of all homicides in the U.S. that year.  The region's homicide rate of 8.8 deaths per 100,000 population was the second highest regionally in the U.S., with only the Southeast recording a higher homicide death rate.  A closer study of state-level data from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics provides the following details about homicide rates in the Great Lakes region:

Homicide Rates in New England

In 2020, homicides accounted for more than 24,500 deaths in the United States.  The six-state New England region accounted for 413 homicide deaths, or about 1.7% of all 2020 U.S. homicide deaths.  At 2.8 deaths per 100,000 population, New England had the lowest homicide death rate of any U.S. region in 2020.  Further examination of state-level data from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics details the following about homicide rates in New England:
