Rehabilitation hospitals are important components of the hospital infrastructure that serves the inpatient care needs of more than 61 million Americans with Medicare Part A insurance coverage. In calendar year 2019, more than 6,000 hospitals, housing over 932,000 beds, were participating in the Medicare program. Rehabilitation hospitals accounted for about 5% of Medicare's total participating hospitals and just over 2% of total hospital bed capacity.
In calendar year 2019, the seven-state Great Plains region of the U.S. was home to 17 rehabilitation hospitals, with less than 1,100 beds in total, who were participating in the Medicare program. Compared to some other regions of the country, the Great Plains states were underserved by rehabilitation hospital bed capacity as it was home to about 6.6% of Medicare Part A enrollees, but only 5.6% of the program's rehabilitation hospital beds. Moreover, two states in the region had no rehabilitation hospitals in the Medicare program in 2019.
