Psychiatric hospitals are part of the hospital infrastructure serving more than 62 million Americans having Medicare Part A insurance coverage. More than 6,200 hospitals of all kinds, having over 927,000 beds in total, were participating in the Medicare program in the 2020 calendar year. Psychiatric hospitals accounted for about 9.9% of those hospitals and 6.6% of those hospital beds.
In the 2020 calendar year, the five-state Great Lakes region of the U.S. was home to 102 psychiatric hospitals, with over 8,170 beds, that were participating in the Medicare program. As such, the region was home to about 14.7% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollment and about 14.2% of the Medicare program's psychiatric hospital beds.
