Psychiatric hospitals are an integral part of the hospital system serving the mental health needs of over 61 million Americans with Medicare Part A insurance coverage. As of calendar year 2019, there were 604 psychiatric hospitals, with nearly 59,900 beds, that were participating in the Medicare program nationally.
In calendar year 2019, the five-state Rocky Mountain region was home to 22 psychiatric hospitals, with more than 2,100 beds, that were participating in the Medicare program. Most Medicare enrollees in the Rocky Mountain states are well served for psychiatric hospital bed capacity. Home to just 3.2% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollees, the region holds a disproportionately larger share (3.6%) of the program's psychiatric hospital bed capacity.
