Psychiatric hospitals are an integral part of the hospital system serving the mental health needs of over 62 million Americans with Medicare Part A insurance coverage. As of the calendar year 2020, there were 613 psychiatric hospitals, with over 61,100 beds, that were participating in the Medicare program nationally.
In the calendar year 2020, the five-state Rocky Mountain region was home to 22 psychiatric hospitals, with nearly 2,200 beds, that were participating in the Medicare program. Most Medicare enrollees in the Rocky Mountain states are well served for psychiatric hospital bed capacity. Home to just 3.3% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollees, the region holds a disproportionately larger share (3.6%) of the program's psychiatric hospital bed capacity.
