Medicare Psychiatric Hospital Beds in the Far West

Psychiatric hospitals are key elements of the hospital infrastructure that serves over 62 million Americans with Medicare Part A insurance coverage.  In the calendar year 2020, over 6,200 hospitals of all types, with over 927,300 beds in total, were participating in the Medicare program.  Roughly 10% of those hospitals were psychiatric hospitals and they accounted for about 6.6% of total hospital beds.

The six-state Far West region of the U.S. was home to 65 psychiatric hospitals, with nearly 5,400 beds, that were participating in the Medicare program in the calendar year 2020.  Most Medicare enrollees in the Far West region are relatively under-served for psychiatric hospital bed capacity.  Although the region is home to over 15% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollees, the Far West states hold only 8.8% of the program's psychiatric hospital bed capacity.  Here is a closer look at Medicare psychiatric hospital beds in the Far West region of the U.S.:
