Medicare Psychiatric Hospital Beds in the Far West

Psychiatric hospitals are key elements of the hospital infrastructure that serves over 60 million Americans with Medicare Part A insurance coverage.  In calendar year 2019, over 6,000 hospitals of all types, with over 932,500 beds in total, were participating in the Medicare program.  Roughly 10% of those hospitals were psychiatric hospitals and they accounted for about 6.4% of total hospital beds.  

The six-state Far West region of the U.S. was home to 63 psychiatric hospitals, with over 5,000 beds, who were participating in the Medicare program in calendar year 2019.  Most Medicare enrollees in the Far West region are under-served for psychiatric hospital bed capacity.  Although the region is home to over 15% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollees, the Far West states hold only 8.4% of the program's psychiatric hospital beds.  Here is a closer look at Medicare psychiatric hospital beds in the Far West region of the U.S.:
