Short stay hospitals provide acute inpatient care and are the backbone to the hospital infrastructure serving the needs of more than 61 million Americans having Medicare Part A insurance coverage. Of the more than 6,000 hospitals that participate in the Medicare program, about 53% were short stay hospitals. Moreover, short stay hospitals accounted for more than 83% of the total hospital beds serving Medicare Par A enrollees.
In the Rocky Mountain region, as of calendar year 2019, there were 122 short stay hospitals, with just over 21,000 beds, participating in the Medicare program. While the region was home to about 3.2% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollment, it had less than 3% of the Medicare program's short stay hospital beds.
