Psychiatric hospitals make up an important part of the hospital system serving the mental health needs of more than 62 million Americans with Medicare Part A insurance coverage. As of the calendar year 2020 about 9.9% of the 6,200 plus hospitals that participated in the Medicare program were psychiatric hospitals. And those psychiatric hospitals represented about 6.6% of the Medicare program's total hospital bed capacity.
In the calendar year 2020, the six-state New England region was home to 33 psychiatric hospitals, with more than 3,600 beds, that were participating in the Medicare program. Most Medicare enrollees in New England are well served for psychiatric hospital bed capacity. Although the region is home to just under 5% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollees, New England states hold 6% of the program's psychiatric hospital bed capacity.
