Medicare Short Stay Hospital Beds in the Great Lakes Region

Delivering acute inpatient care, short stay hospitals are the backbone of the hospital infrastructure that serves more than 61 million Americans with Medicare Part A insurance.  As of calendar year 2019, more than 6,000 hospitals of all kinds participated in the Medicare program. More than 54% of those participating hospitals were short stay hospitals.  More significantly, participating short stay hospitals accounted for more than 83% of the total hospital beds serving Medicare Part A enrollees with inpatient hospital services.

In calendar year 2019, there were 494 short stay hospitals in the Great Lakes region that were participating in the Medicare program.  The short stay hospitals in the region housed just over 125,000 beds.  While the region was home to about 14.8% of the nation's Medicare Part A enrollment, it held 16.0% of the Medicare program's short stay hospital bed capacity.  Here is a state-level look at Medicare short stay hospital beds in the Great Lakes region:
