Medicare Psychiatric Hospital Beds in the Southeastern U.S.

Psychiatric hospitals are major elements of the hospital infrastructure that serves more than 62 million Americans with Medicare Part A insurance coverage.  In the calendar year 2020, more than 6,200 hospitals of all types, with in excess of 927,000 beds in total, were participating in the Medicare program.  Psychiatric hospitals comprised roughly 9.9% of those hospitals and about 6.6% of those total hospital beds.

The twelve-state Southeastern U.S. region was home to 172 psychiatric hospitals, with nearly 15,700 beds, that were participating in the Medicare program in the calendar year 2020.  Most Medicare enrollees in the Southeastern U.S. are reasonably well-served for psychiatric hospital bed capacity.  The region holds about 25.7% of Medicare's psychiatric bed capacity, which is generally in line with the region's 27.3% share of Medicare's Part A enrollment.  Here is a deeper look at Medicare psychiatric hospital beds in the Southeastern U.S.:
