The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) most current occupational employment data put physician assistant (PA) employment at just over 125,000 nationally as of May 2020. Nearly 5,900 of those physician assistant jobs were in the five-state Rocky Mountain region. BLS data painted a generally weak picture for physician assistant pay levels in the region. Although three states in the region registered PA annual mean wage levels above the national average, more than 70% of the region's physician assistants lived in the two states where annual mean wages fell short of that average. A closer examination of BLS data from May 2020 reveals the following details about physician assistant pay in the Rocky Mountain region:
