According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, there were 97,740 physical therapy assistants (PTA) employed in the U.S. as of May 2022. Physical therapy assistants work in a variety of healthcare settings, including skilled nursing facilities, non-physician practitioner offices, hospitals, home health agencies, and physician offices. With some advanced technical skills and training, physical therapy assistants generally earn modestly better salaries than workers in most occupations. The BLS reported that, as of May 2022, the national mean salary for PTAs was $64,510 per year. Slightly lower at $62,770 per annum was the profession's median wage, which is the mid-point on the wage scale between the upper and lower half of wage earners. BLS data indicates that the nation's 25 largest metro areas accounted for about 36% of physical therapy assistant jobs as of May 2022.
