Medicare Short Stay Hospital Beds in the Mid-East U.S. Region

Short-stay hospitals provide acute inpatient care and serve as the foundation of the hospital infrastructure serving over 62 million Americans with Medicare Part A insurance coverage.  In the calendar year 2020, across the country there were over 3,400 short-stay hospitals, with more than 774,000 beds, that participated in the Medicare program.  At that time, the Mid-East U.S. region, which encompasses five states and the District of Columbia, was home to 405 short-stay hospitals, with more than 118,500 beds, that participated in the Medicare program.  This made the region home to about 15% of Medicare's Part A enrollees and about 15.3% of Medicare's short-stay hospital bed capacity.  Here is a more detailed look at Medicare short-stay hospital beds in the Mid-East U.S. region:
