The CMS rating methodology involves analyzing data from participating hospitals on key quality of care measures, calculating a score for each metric, and then aggregating the scores into a unified quality rating on a 1 to 5-star scale, with 5-stars being the high score on the scale. The particular metrics studied for acute care hospitals include the timeliness of care, patient safety, patient experience, readmission rates, and mortality. As of November 5, 2025, nine (9) acute care hospitals, including two devoted to veterans' care, in the state of Washington earned a five-star quality rating from the CMS.
