In 2020, there were 696,962 heart disease deaths in the United States, about 5.8% more than the prior year. The Mid-Eastern U.S., a region comprised of five states and the District of Columbia, recorded nearly 117,400 heart disease deaths in 2020. With 240.7 heart disease deaths per 100,000 population, about 13.8% above the national average, the Mid-Eastern U.S. had one of the highest regional heart disease death rates in the country in 2020.
