The most current occupational employment numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimated that over 180,000 medical records specialists were working in the U.S. as of May 2021. With more than 19,300 medical records specialists working at that time, the Mid-Eastern U.S. region accounted for 10.7% of medical records specialist employment in the United States. BLS data revealed the region, which includes five states and the District of Columbia, to be one of the best nationally for medical records specialist pay. Only one state in the region registered an annual mean wage level that was below the national average for the profession, and four Mid-Eastern U.S. states ranked among the ten states nationally with the highest annual mean wage levels for medical records specialists, including top rated New Jersey.
