According to the most recent occupational employment data published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), as of May 2020, just over 34,700 chiropractors were employed in the United States. About 3,900 of those employed as chiropractors lived in the four-state Southwestern U.S. For chiropractors, pay levels in the Southwest were generally good, but there was wide variation in the region. About 79% of the region's chiropractors lived in a state where the annual mean wage for chiropractors topped the national average. This included Oklahoma, which ranked as one of the five best states in the nation for chiropractor annual mean wages. At the other end of the spectrum was New Mexico, home to less than 4% of the Southwest's chiropractors, which ranked as one of the five worst states in the nation for chiropractor annual mean wages.
