Recently released data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) put family medicine physician employment in the United States at just over 98,500 as of May 2020. More than 14,300 family medicine physicians were working in the six-state Far West region. A look at BLS data reveals wide pay disparity for Far West region family medicine physicians. At least 80% of family medicine physicians in the region lived in a state where the annual mean wage for the profession was near, or slightly lower than, the national average for the family medicine physicians. At the same time, however, three states in the region ranked among the six best states nationally for family medicine physician annual mean wages.
