The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) published reports recently indicating that there were nearly 148,500 speech language pathologists (SLPs) working in the United States as of May 2020. More than 19,000 of those employed as SLPs in the U.S. lived in the four-state Southwest region of the country. The Southwest region is among the weakest regions in the country for speech language pathologist pay, with all four states in the region registering average SLP annual mean wage levels 4% to 10% below the national average. An examination of BLS data from May 2020 reveals the following about speech language pathologist pay in the U.S. Southwest:
