Earlier this summer the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) published data indicating that, as of May 2020, there were more than 176,000 healthcare social workers (HSWs) at work in the U.S. More than 38,000 of those HSW jobs were in the twelve-state Southeastern region of the country. BLS data reveals the Southeastern U.S. to be a generally poor one for healthcare social worker pay, as no state in the region registers a HSW annual mean wage that tops the national average of $60,470. Moreover, half the states in the region have a HSW annual mean wages that ranks 40th or worse nationally.
