More than 58,000 clinical psychologists were employed in the U.S. as of May 2021 per the most current occupational employment data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). At that time, the seven-state Great Plains region was home to an estimated 3,850 working clinical psychologists. BLS data revealed the region to be a poor one overall for clinical psychologist pay. Although Iowa and North Dakota ranked among the top fifteen states nationally for clinical psychologist annual mean wages, more than 85% of the region's employed clinical psychologists lived in a state where that pay metric was below the national average for the profession. Closer examination of May 2021 state-level data from the BLS reveals the following about clinical psychologist pay in the Great Plains region:
