Earlier this year the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released data reporting that over 20,000 recreational therapists were employed in the United States as of May 2020. Just over 4,000 recreational therapists were employed in the twelve-state Southeastern region according to BLS data. Compared to the rest of the nation, BLS data revealed the region to be a relatively poor one for recreational therapist pay, with only one state in the region showing a recreational therapist annual mean wage level that was above the national average. A closer examination of May 2020 BLS data shows the following about recreational therapist pay in the U.S. Southeast:
