The most current occupational employment figures available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) estimated medical transcriptionist employment at over 52,400 as of May 2023. At that time, 7,130 medical transcriptionists were estimated by the BLS to be working in the five-state Great Lakes region. A review of BLS data revealed that, except for Wisconsin and Indiana, the Great Lakes region was a subpar pay region for medical transcriptionists. In the other three Great Lakes states, the medical transcriptionist annual mean wage level was below the national average for the profession.
