NYU Langone Health is an academic medical institution headquartered in Manhattan and affiliated with New York University. US News ranks it #8 on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll.  Its health system includes

U.S. News & World Report has also named NYU Langone among the top 10 hospitals in the country for specialties including cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; gastroenterology and GI surgery; geriatrics; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; psychiatry; pulmonology and lung surgery; rehabilitation; rheumatology; and urology.

The medical school at NYU opened in 1841, with clinical instruction held at Bellevue Hospital, and continuing there today. In 1963, NYU opened its own hospital building, now called Tisch Hospital. In 2018, the medical school began providing full scholarships for all current and future students in its MD program. US News ranks the Grossman School of Medicine as the #2 medical school for research in the U.S.

Milestones include

  • 1854: First successful resection of a hip joint performed by Dr. Lewis Sayre, first professor of orthopedic surgery in the U.S.
  • 1867: First clinical professorship devoted to dermatology.
  • 1872: NYU Professor Steven Smith founded the American Public Health Association
  • 1884: Carnegie Laboratory, first facility in the U.S. devoted to teaching and research in bacteriology and pathology
  • 1932: First department of forensic medicine in the U.S.
  • 1933: Dr. William Tillett conducts groundbreaking studies of enzymes involved in blood clotting, helping combat heart attacks
  • 1941: The first department of physical medicine and rehabilitation in the United States is established at NYU
  • 1959: A Nobel Prize is awarded to NYU's Dr. Severo Ochoa for research on biochemical genetics and nucleic acids
  • 1964: NYU starts one of the first U.S. Medical Scientist Training Programs (dual MD/PhD graduate programs funded by the NIH)
  • 1980: NYU professor Saul Krugman, M.D., developed the first vaccine against hepatitis B
  • 1981: NYU scientists link a rare cancer, Kaposi's sarcoma, with an immune deficiency called AIDS
  • 2013: NYU School of Medicine introduces accelerated three-year MD program.
  • 2019: NYU Grossman School of Medicine's Science Building is opened, dedicated to research in the area of Human Genetics, System Biology, Neurobiology, and Medicine.

Xenotransplantation for Critically Needed Organs  Less than two months after the first breakthrough surgery (September 25, 2021), NYU Langone Health has performed its second successful investigational xenotransplantation procedure using a genetically engineered pig kidney. This second surgery is a sign of continued progress toward a potential alternative supply of life-saving organs.
