Only 164 hospitals, out of more than 5,000 hospitals in the U.S., earned national recognition in at least one of the 15 adult specialties examined in the most recent (22-23) U.S. News & World Report rankings of American hospitals. While several Great Plains region teaching hospitals earned national recognition in at least one adult specialty, only two teaching hospitals in the region were recognized among the top 20 best hospitals nationally: the internationally renowned Mayo Clinic, rated the #1 hospital in the nation in the recent U.S. News survey, and St. Louis based Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
