Only 134 hospitals, out of almost 5,000 hospitals in the U.S., earned national recognition in at least one of the 16 adult specialties examined in the most recent (20-21) U.S. News & World Report rankings of American hospitals. While several Plains Region teaching hospitals earned national recognition in at least one adult specialty, only two teaching hospitals in the region were recognized among the top 20 best hospitals nationally: the internationally renown Mayo Clinic, rated the #1 hospital in the nation in the recent U.S. News survey, and St. Louis based Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
