The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) latest occupational employment estimates put the number of medical transcriptionist jobs in the United States at nearly 56,000 as of May 2021. At that time, an estimated 14,600 medical transcriptionists were employed in the twelve-state Southeastern U.S. region. BLS data reveals the Southeastern U.S. to be one of the weakest regions in the nation for medical transcriptionist pay, with more than three-fourths of the region's medical transcriptionists living in a state where the annual mean wage for the profession was below the national average. Moreover, half the states in the Southeastern U.S. ranked among the bottom quartile of all states nationally for medical transcriptionist annual mean wage levels.
