The National Institutes of Health is the U.S. government agency which drives medical research to benefit public health. It consists of 27 institutes and centers, including the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which is run by Dr. Anthony Fauci. The latest updates on NIH research for COVID-19 are at https://www.nih.gov/health-information/coronavirus
The U.S. Congress began funding medical research in the late 1870’s, searching for the causes of cholera and yellow fever. The NIH employs about 20,000 people including 6,000 scientific researchers. In addition to conducting research in its own labs, it funds outside research, educates scientists, and fosters communication among researchers.
The member institutes investigate cancer, aging, drug abuse, human genome research, and much more. The NIH Clinical Center is America's research hospital.
